An individual's propensity to take risks will depend on a number of factors. An important one to bear in mind is the attitude of your employer to risk taking.
Some organisations are so averse to risk taking, the best way to get on in your career is to do nothing! That way you won't make any mistakes. Organisations like this are unlikely to progress far.
A classic example of risk aversion is central government. Since the press pounce on every mistake, and ignore real improvements (risk taking that paid off), government often prefers to do nothing than risk vilification.
